High-performance flexible energy storage and harvesting system for wearable electronics.

This paper reports on the design and operation of a flexible power source integrating a lithium ion battery and amorphous silicon solar module, optimized to supply power to a wearable health monitoring device. The battery consists of printed anode and cathode layers based on graphite and lithium cobalt oxide, respectively, on thin flexible current collectors. It displays energy density of 6.98 mWh/cm(2) and demonstrates capacity retention of 90% at 3C discharge rate and ~99% under 100 charge/discharge cycles and 600 cycles of mechanical flexing. A solar module with appropriate voltage and dimensions is used to charge the battery under both full sun and indoor illumination conditions, and the addition of the solar module is shown to extend the battery lifetime between charging cycles while powering a load. Furthermore, we show that by selecting the appropriate load duty cycle, the average load current can be matched to the solar module current and the battery can be maintained at a constant state of charge. Finally, the battery is used to power a pulse oximeter, demonstrating its effectiveness as a power source for wearable medical devices

European periphery crises, international financial markets, and democracy: moving towards a globalized neofeudalism?

This paper analyzes the origin and causes of the recent economic and financial crises, mainly for the countries located in the periphery of the European Union (EU), as well as their evolution and transformation into social, political, and institutional crises. After explaining the differential impact of the crises on EU member economies and critically analysing the unsuccessful orthodox neoclassical policies implemented by governments and international institutions to try to manage and resolve them, we propose some alternative economic policy measures for the EU. Furthermore, we analyze how the economic policies developed thus far not only are unable to resolve the current crisis pattern but also actually entail a risk to the present democratic models by transferring the legitimate control over governments from citizens and democratic parliaments to unelected, non-representative international financial markets.

Análisis de los efectos teratogénicos del ácido valproico en el desarrollo del tubo neural del pez cebra y los efectos protectores de la vitamina C

[Resumen:] El ácido valproico (VPA) es el principal anticonvulsionante utilizado contra la epilepsia. Sin embargo, durante la gestación actúa como teratógeno en las etapas iniciales del embarazo, principalmente ocasionando malformaciones en el sistema nervioso central (SNC). Esto es debido a un aumento de las especies reactivas del oxígeno, pudiéndose contrarrestar añadiendo un antioxidante natural. El objetivo de este proyecto es determinar si la vitamina C disminuye el efecto teratógeno sobre el tubo neural del VPA en embriones de pez cebra transgénicos tratados con diferentes concentraciones de este anticonvulsionante. A las 96 horas post-fecundación se realizará un análisis de la morfología del tubo neural bajo el estereomicroscopio. También se realizará una técnica de inmunofluorescencia para la detección de la proteína Zonula Occludens-1 (ZO-1) para poder observar la morfología del ventrículo del tubo neural. Esto permitirá una mejor observación de malformaciones bajo el microscopio de fluorescencia tras las exposiciones al anticonvulsionante y al agente antioxidante.[Resumo:] O ácido valproico (VPA) é o principal antionvulsionante empregado contra a epilepsia. Ás 96 horas post-fecundación realizarase un estudo baixo o estereomicroscopio. Tamén realizaremos unha técnica de inmunofluorescencia para a detección da proteína Zonula Occludens-1 (ZO-1) para poder observar a morfoloxía do ventrículo do tubo neural. Esto permitirá una mellor observación de malformacións baixo o microscopio de fluorescencia tras as exposicións ó anticonvulsionante e ó axente oxidante.[Abstract:] Valproic acid (VPA) is the main anticonvulsant used for epilepsy. However, it acts as a tetarogenic agent during early pregnancy, causing malformations in the central nervous system of the embryo (CNS). This teratogenic effect is caused by the increase in reactive oxygen species, which can be countered with the supplementation of vitamin C. The aim of this proyect is to determine if vitamin C 5 minimizes the tetarogenic effect of VPA in in the neural tube of of transgenic zebrafish embryos treated with different concentrations of this anticonvulsant. At 96 hours post-fertilization, we will study the larvae under a stereomicrosope. In addition, we will perform an immunofluorescent staining against the Zonula Occludens-1 (ZO-1) protein in order to observe ventricular surface of the neural tube. La Identificación, estructuración y documentación de los procesos y procedimientos inmersos en su que hacer de las Empresas Publicas de Armenia, serán un instrumento para la planificación hacia el logro de los objetivos institucionales, al igual que para la gestión y la evaluación permanente en la perspectiva de contribuir a la creación de un sistema de aseguramiento de la calidad que garantice la prestación de servicios. Al contrario de lo sucedido en España, el interés por la obra de Cervantes en Inglaterra se mantiene constante desde la época de su publicación hasta el siglo XX. En estas circunstancias, pocos autores podrían sustraerse a la influencia quijotesca y Tolkien no será una excepción. En numerosos aspectos de su obra se aprecia este influjo, proveniente bien de su relación con su tutor medio español, bien de la lectura directa en versión original, o en una de las numerosas traducciones que se hicieron de la obra o bien indirectamente a través de la lectura de alguno de los estudios que se publicaban en las fechas en que se gestaban los relatos de la Tierra Media. El objetivo del presente trabajo será concretar algunos de los aspectos de The Lord of the Rings en los que podemos apreciar ese influjo cervantino

En este artículo se pone de manifiesto la forma en que se plasma este mismo motivo en El Señor de los Anillos de J.R.R. Tolkien, autor que tenía una especial vinculación con la literatura medieval y con lo hispánico

Ejecutive projectof the installations in Assisted Residence Cardedeu

El presente trabajo nace al cursar el DAC, consiste en el ejecutivo para las instalaciones de un edificio ubicado en Cardedeu, bajo la premisa que el edificio es de uso terciario, se inicia con la construcción de datos, continuando con la aplicación de normativa de acuerdo a cada caso. Seguido se han implementado formulas y programas de cálculo para finalmente realizar el trazado. El objetivo del presente trabajo es conseguir un edificio que brinde servicios según sus necesidades y carácter, esta proyectado teniendo en cuenta la compatibilidad entre las diferentes instalaciones para que funcionen de forma optima. De acuerdo a las opciones presentes en el mercado se han elegido las que mejor responden a criterios de eficiencia y sostenibilidad. El edificio está ubicado en la Av. del Rei en Jaume, 4 Cardedeu. Se trata de una reforma y cambio de uso de hotel a residencia y centro de día. Consta de 4 plantas sobre rasante; en planta baja ubicadas zonas de servicio y comunes, en las tres plantas superiores las zonas privativas y algunas comunes. It consists on the ejecutive for the installations in a building located in Cardedeu, under the premise that the building is of terciary use, it is initiated with the data construction followed by the application of the normative based on each case. Formulas and calculation programs have been implemented in order to complete its outline. The objective of the present work is to find a building that offers services based on its needs and characteristics. It is projected to have an optimal function considering the compatibility between installations. According to the present options in the market, the most optimal and efficient have been chosen in response to the criteria and sustainability. The building is located in Av. del Rei en Jaume, 4 Cardedeu. It consists on a reform and change of use from hotel to residency and recreational center for the day. Its equipped with 4 floors above ground; underground the service zones and common areas are located, in the three first floors the private areas and some common areas. Printed Receive Coils with High Acoustic Transparency for Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound.

In magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) therapy sound waves are focused through the body to selectively ablate difficult to access lesions and tissues. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner non-invasively tracks the temperature increase throughout the tissue to guide the therapy. In clinical MRI, tightly fitted hardware comprised of multichannel coil arrays are required to capture high quality images at high spatiotemporal resolution. Ablating tissue requires a clear path for acoustic energy to travel but current array materials scatter and attenuate acoustic energy. As a result coil arrays are placed outside of the transducer, clear of the beam path, compromising imaging speed, resolution, and temperature accuracy of the scan. Here we show that when coil arrays are fabricated by additive manufacturing (i.e., printing), they exhibit acoustic transparency as high as 89.5%. This allows the coils to be placed in the beam path increasing the image signal to noise ratio (SNR) five-fold in phantoms and volunteers. We also characterize printed coil materials properties over time when submerged in the water required for acoustic coupling. These arrays offer high SNR and acceleration capabilities, which can address current challenges in treating head and abdominal tumors allowing MRgFUS to give patients better outcomes
